Botox Injection (Botulinum)

Wrinkles are the most common sign of aging. There are three types of facial wrinkles : skin fold wrinkles, static wrinkles, and dynamic wrinkles.

Skin fold wrinkles are often due to sagging of the underlying facial structures, most causing the deep grooves between the nose and mouth known as naso-labial folds, or smile lines. Besides surgical lift procedures, which offer the best corrective measures for these problems, the folds can be camouflaged temporarily by filling up the groove with injectable skin fillers made from collagen, hyaluronic acid.

Static wrinkles are due to lack of elasticity of the skin caused from sun damage, genetics, poor nutrition, or from prolonged dynamic wrinkling. Static facial wrinkles are visible regardless of muscle contraction, they stay even when the muscles are not contracting. Techniques that remove the damaged skin are effective wrinkle treatments. Laser skin resurfacing and deeper chemical peels remove the damaged skin and stimulate new collagen formation to improve the skin's appearance, elasticity and thickness. These wrinkles are superficial and their removal is relatively easy through skin care, micropeels, and other simple treatments.

Dynamic wrinkles are caused by contraction of muscles that are attached to the overlying skin. Each muscle contraction causes the skin to bunch together, forming lines between the bulk of the muscle. The most common locations for dynamic wrinkles are horizontal lines across the forehead, frown lines between the eyebrows, and lines extending from the outer corners of eyes(also called “crow's feet”) . These wrinkles develop because we smile, laugh, or frown, After making the same expressions time after time, our skin "remembers" these creases. These wrinkles can be improved by Botox.

Botulism toxin Type A, often referred to its commercial tradename Botox, is a natural, purified protein derived from baterium Clostridium Botulinum that relaxes wrinkle-causing muscle creating a smoothed, rejuvenated amd more youthful appearance.

First discovered in 1895, it took over fifty years to purify. Doctors were searching for a way to treat the hyperactive muscles around the eyes that cause "wandering eye". By weakening the muscle with the Botox, doctors have been treating children and adults since 1980. After the initial success, physicians transferred this technique to cosmetic problems, and the use of Botox for non-surgical wrinkle treatment was born.

Botox is a popular non-surgical procedure and has proven to be very useful in the temporarily reduction or elimination of facial wrinkle: gabella frown lines (the crease between the eyebrows), horizontal forehead lines, crow's feet (or smile lines around the eyes) and Botox is also being used to lift the eyebrow and open up the eye for a more youthful appearance.

Studies have also suggested that Botox is effective in relieving migraine headaches, excessive sweating and muscle spasms in the neck and eyes.

Botox has been proven to be a safe and effective treatment for wrinkles, and botox injection is becoming increasingly popular. Botox does not cause botulism symptoms because the amount is far smaller and the result of a localized injection, not an entire body poisoning. Botox works on the specific areas treated. It will not "freeze" your facial expressions. It softens them and works where you want it to. It does not travel throughout the body and dose not remain in your body indefinitely.

Botox has been used for many years for the treatment of facial and eye muscle problems. During the course of treatment of some of these problems, it was noticed that nearby wrinkles improved. Injection directly into the wrinkled areas was then done and relatively long-lasting improvement was seen.

Botox injection is a very simple process that can be accomplished in about 10 minutes, depending upon the amount injected and number of desired treatment areas. Botox is injected directly into the muscle with a very fine needle. No anesthetic is required, or some patients that be afraid of pain, we can appaly local anesthetic cream (Emla) and wait for half an hour then we inject Botox. This can decrease pain from the needle pass through skin which makes Botox injection can be done without pain at all.

Patients can immediately resume normal activities. After injection it takes 3-4 days for Botox to begin taking effect and around 5-7 days to see the full effect. Normal practice we will ask the patient to come back for check up the result of Botox treatment. If there are any areas still not perfect, I will inject more Botox to make it perfect without anymore charge. Botox lasts on average 4-6 months, depending on the individual. You can decide to repeat the procedure as you wish. The result will wear off gradually and expression lines slowly return. To maintain the effect you will require  repeat injections 2-3 times a year.

In the amounts used for wrinkle therapy, the most common side effects are temporary and localised to the area of injection. These include mild soreness or mild buising, which you can be easily covered with makeup. There have been no permanent side effects of Botox reported.
